InfoSpace, which operates dogpile.com and other lesser search sites, will pay a special dividend of $6.30 on May 28 to holders as of Wednesday, May 16. That’s 24.5% of the share price of $25.740. The dividend is part of an agreement to avoid a proxy contest with Sandell Asset Management Corp., a major shareholder. The agreement also includes resuming the company’s $100 million share repurchase program. This came after a larger-than-expected loss this quarter, amid continuous revenue slide. Most of this dividend should be taxed as return of capital.

    Newbie question about INSP. If the on record date is May 16th and I buy INSP three days prior to May 16th, can I sell on May 17th and still receive the dividend on May 28 since I was the owner of record? When is the soonest I can sell and receive the dividend?

    To Newbie,

    The answer to question is “No.” You can sell them on the day they’ll pay the special dividend before the bell opens. Meaning, you sell on the pre-market hours.

    No, Newbie is correct. If the ex-dividend is 5/16, you only need to have bought it before 5/16 (including pre-market hour on 5/16)

    The confusion comes from 5/16 being the ex-dividend date, not the record date as Newbie said. The record date is pretty much irrelevent (and is not even mentioned in the original post above)

    Look at this.. will answer all your questions…

    You have to buy before the ‘X’ date and you can sell on ‘X’ date to get the div… whihc usually is paid on the pay date ~15-30 days later… but you pay taxes of 15% if you hold the stock for 60 days and You pay taxes on div at your tax rate if you hold for less than 60 days..
